[해외 농기계 기술동향]

4차 산업혁명과 함께 우리 주변의 모든 환경은 가파르게 변화되고 있다. IoT, 빅데이터, AI, 클라우드, Mobile, 로봇 등의 요소들이 융합되어 새로운 가치를 창조해 내고 있다. 농기계분야에도 이미 이러한 정보통신 및 첨단기술들이 접목되어 새로운 산업분야로 급속히 변모해 갈 것으로 전망된다. 본지는 해외 농기계기술 분야의 새로운 트랜드에 대해 연간기획으로 전문가의 도움을 받아 미래를 가늠해 볼 수 있는 해외 농기계 기술동향을 살펴본다.

A 5-year-old can tie their shoelaces, but robot hands aren’t nearly so nimble. A new system, however, has greatly improved their dexterity.
Hard-coding a robot to coordinate multiple joints is daunting. So computer scientists have turned to machine learning, a field of artificial intelligence (AI) in which computers build skills on their own. Such learning takes time and repetition, however, and robot hardware is slow and breakable. Some researchers instead train algorithms with virtual robots, but reality is always slightly different from simulation.
The new work overcame this “reality gap”by slightly randomizing elements of the simulation during training, such as friction and object size. (Most of the work, in both simulation and reality, was done with a child’s building block with letters on its sides.) They also gave the program short-term memory, so after a few seconds of handling the cube, it got a sense of the block’s exact size and other factors and adjusted for them.
The researchers used the commercial Shadow Dexterous Hand*, which resembles a human hand, attached to a wall, along with a digital simulation of the hand for training. In both virtual training and a physical test to see how well the training transferred to the real hand, the hand was instructed to manipulate a cube in a series of new orientations so that, for example, the side with the A on it was facing up and side with the P on it was facing out. No robot hand had ever done something nearly as complicated.
In the real world, the system “saw”the cube using three cameras placed above the hand. The virtual hand, after the equivalent of 100 years of trial-and-error practice (sped up in simulation), performed an average of 30 consecutive reorientations without getting stuck or dropping the cube. The physical hand completed an average of 15 consecutive reorientations without getting stuck or dropping the cube, the researchers report today. The system, called Dactyl, also discovered common human tricks such as spinning the cube between two fingertips or taking advantage of gravity to shift the block.
The advance might improve the assembly of delicate electronics or the ability of health care or domestic robots to help around the house.

5살짜리 아이는 신발 끈을 묶을 수 있지만 로봇 손은 그런 작업을 할 수 있을 만큼 민첩하지 않다. 이번에 새로 개발한 시스템은 그런 게 가능할 정도로 로봇의 기량을 크게 향상시켰다.
프로그램을 써서 로봇이 여러 관절을 조정할 수 있도록 하는 것은 어렵다. 그래서 컴퓨터 과학자들은 컴퓨터가 스스로 기술을 개발하는 인공 지능(AI)의 한 분야인 기계 학습으로 눈을 돌렸다. 그러나 그러한 학습은 시간이 많이 걸리고 반복이 필요하며, 로봇 하드웨어는 느리고 깨지기도 쉽다. 가상 로봇으로 알고리즘을 훈련시키는 과학자들도 있기는 하지만, 현실이라는 것은 늘 가상 모의실험과 약간의 차이가 있기 마련이다.
이번에 소개하는 새로운 연구는, 가상 로봇을 훈련시킬 때 마찰력이나 물체 크기 같은 것을 측정하는 순서를 약간 바꿈으로서 ‘가상과 현실의 차이’를 극복했다. (가상 현실과 실제 현실 모두에서, 측면에 문자가 있는 어린이용 빌딩 블록으로 대부분의 작업을 했다.) 그들은 또한 프로그램에 단기기억을 주어서 큐브를 다룬 몇 초 후에 블록의 정확한 크기와 다른 요소들을 감지하도록 조정했다.
연구원들은 사람 손과 닮은 상업적으로 판매되고 있는 손을 이용하여 디지털 모의시험으로 로봇 손을 훈련시켰다. 로봇 손이 얼마나 잘 훈련되었는지를 알아보기 위해 큐브에 쓰인 글자 A가 위를 향하고 있고, P가 밖을 향하고 있는 큐브를 조작하는 실험을 했다. 아직까지 어떤 로봇 손도 이렇게 복잡한 일을 해 본적이 없다.
로봇 손이 큐브를 다루는 훈련 결과를 확인하기 위해 실제 세계에서 손 위에 있는 카메라 세 대를 사용하여 큐브를 관찰했다. 모의실험에 쓰인 (모의시험에서 속도를 낸) 가상의 손은 100년에 해당하는 시간이 흐른 후, 큐브를 잡거나 떨어뜨리지 않고 평균 30번을 연속적으로 맞췄다. 사람 손은 큐브에 걸리거나 떨어지지 않고 평균 15번을 연속적인 맞췄다고 연구원들이 오늘 발표했다. 댁딜이라고 하는 이 시스템은 큐브를 두 손가락 사이로 돌리거나 블록을 이동시키기 위해 중력을 이용하는 것과 같은 일반적인 인간의 기술도 구현할 수 있다.
로봇 기술이 이렇게까지 발전하고 있다. 이런 진전은 섬세한 전자제품의 조립이나 인간의 건강관리 또는 집안 일을 돕는 가정용 로봇의 능력을 획기적으로 향상시킬 수 있다.

영국 런던에 있는 로봇 회사에서 개발한 로봇 손. 사람 손과 크기와 모양이 비슷하고, 공압과 전기모터로 작동하여 손처럼 자유자재로 움직일 수 있다. 현재, 미국 항공우주국 등 다양한 기관에서 사용하고 있다.

[시사점]
예전의 로봇은 컴퓨터를 장착한 기계라고 볼 수 있다. 인간이 만들어준 프로그램에 따라 지치지 않고 반복적으로 작업할 수 있는 게 로봇이었다.
그러나 요즘 로봇은 다르다. 바둑 두는 알파고에서 확인했듯이, 인공지능을 장착하고 있어 스스로 학습이 가능하다. 인간이 프로그램을 만들어서 입력해주지 않아도 스스로 발전할 수 있는 것이다.
동물과 식물을 다루는 농업기계도 모의실험을 통해 최적의 조건을 찾을 수 있을 것이며, 인공지능을 써서 인간 곁에 더 가깝게 다가올 날이 머지않았다.
