<Overseas Reportage>
Peter van Mispelaar / TRILO
<Summary>
Founded in the 1940s in the Netherlands, TRILO is renowned as a vacuum sweeper company. It exclusively supplies vacuum sweepers to large-scale green spaces such as airports, ports, parks, golf courses, horseback riding courses, highways, and sports facilities in 50 countries around the world. There must be many similar products, but TRILO products are preferred because they have their own unique technology. To find out TRILO's technology development and product management, I visited TRILO in person and met with Peter van Mispelaar, CEO, to hear from him.
Quickly remove foreign substances (FOD) with built-in vacuum turbine
Excellent in humid environments such as airports, ports, drainage waste, and fence waste
Parts, production, electronic control automation system, etc., ship parts 24 hours a day anywhere in the world
When I watch the news on TV, I often hear reports that local residents are suffering from trash thrown away without cleaning up at fireworks festivals, local festivals, or campsites.
It is frowned upon, but they will also do so, and the amount of garbage and waste generated when a large number of people flock to a narrow space will be considerable.
Then, I suddenly had a question. Woodstock, rock festivals, and street festivals in foreign countries, which attract hundreds of thousands of people, reminded me of street scenes that look like battlefields with piles of garbage on the streets the day after the event.
If the cleaning staff is mobilized, it would be necessary to have a divisional-level (?) force. I started searching YouTube thinking that there would not have been much public manpower, and found out that if a large cleaning truck passes by, it would be cleaned up.
Although the direction is a little different, our agricultural sites often need such equipment or machines. This is because there are not only agricultural land and park green areas that are quickly covered with lush grass, but also places to weeding such as riverside, trails, railways, and highways.
As I searched for related equipment, I found that TRILO vacuum sweepers are widely used in airports, ports, and parks that require large-scale weeding. When I looked it up on its website, I found that it is a company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
I happened to have to go on a business trip to Europe for something else, but on the route, I was supposed to go through Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, so I thought I would like to visit.
When I contacted TRILO through the company mail to ask if it would be okay to visit the company for coverage, I received a reply in less than a day that they were willing to welcome the visit.
So I came to visit a company called TRILO without even thinking about it.
Gladly, Mr. Peter van Mispelaar of TRILO's CEO came out to pick me up at the airport, so I was able to visit the factory comfortably.
TRILO is a 30-minute drive from the airport, but it took nearly an hour because it was late in the afternoon when the number of highway vehicles increased.
To live up to its reputation as a canal city, I could see canals everywhere outside the window and saw windmills that I had only seen in pictures. No matter how many times I looked around, I could not see a single hill, but there was an endless amount of farmland.
The reporter's curiosity sparked and asked Peter if the Netherlands was really lower than sea level.
"That's right. 25 percent of the country is below sea level. The area I live in is 4 meters below sea level. Some areas are more than 7 meters below sea level."
Peter said it was insignificant and reminded me of the seriousness of climate change, saying, "It is fortunate that a solid dam is blocking the sea at the moment, but if the sea level rises due to intensifying climate change, the problem becomes serious then. The government already has measures in place, but there will be astronomical costs to raise the dam."
As I drove off the highway and on the side of the road, I could see many people riding bicycles here and there. I thought that maybe all the roads were flat, so it might be convenient to move bicycles.
Peter, who looks 190cm tall, was also curious about the height of most people he encountered in Amsterdam, and asked how tall Dutch people were on average.
Peter kindly explained, "The average height of men is 184 centimeters, and the average height of women is a little over 170 centimeters," and after a long time thinking about why only Dutch people are so tall, he twitched his lips as if he really didn't know why.
When I asked him again if that was the original DNA, he looked a little puzzled, "Maybe...?," and we laughed for a while.
As we chatted like that, we arrived at TRILO company.
The size of the company did not seem very large, with about 3,000§³, but it seemed solid and structured.
As I entered the company, the wall was filled with old pictures showing the company's history. The history of TRILO began in the 1940s before World War II, and Peter pointed out that it was his grandfather who was attaching the horse hoof in the small faded black-and-white photo. He also showed me a picture of the three brothers, saying that the grandfather's three sons inherited the company in the 1970s and have developed TRILO brand of today.
Looking around the factory together, Peter passionately tried to explain the functions and roles of each facility and production line, but unfortunately, there were many language barriers and jargon, so it was difficult to understand exactly what it meant.
However, all systems inside the factory are operated with electronic control and automation systems, and shot-blasting ball painting facilities, CNC processing, parts automation shipping systems, and production processes are all automatically controlled through monitors.
In particular, it seemed very thorough when it came to component management. Hundreds of small parts such as bolts, bearings, assemblies, gears, blades, etc. were stocked on a sealed automated roof top, and unmanned entry and exit management was carried out by electronic control, and parts of a certain volume or larger were systematically stocked on large shelves of 5m or more.
"Part management is more important than finished product management. Our system applies automated factory management and payment management systems to ship within 24 hours when an order is placed in any country in the world."
Peter wanted to explain more about the parts to which TRILO's patented technology was applied, but he noticed the expression of a reporter who was not familiar with mechanical engineering and moved to the finished production line as if he had given up.
The tractor-towered vacuum sweepers are lined up with various models from small to large according to the working environment, and even for large models, a tractor with 90-110 horsepower can be sufficiently worked.
"TRILO trailer type sweepers are all equipped with vacuum turbines. This is what distinguishes it from other companies' products. Even if foreign substances are prevented from being sucked into the vacuum, the machine can operate without stopping by drilling through the parts where TRILO's patented brush shaft and cutting shaft are organically blocked. In addition, even in the case of grass that has been wet and covered with water, the horizontal and vertical double-axis blades are cut, swept up with a brush to suck it up, and the weeding height can be adjusted up to 25§¯."
Peter explained that along with the technical characteristics of TRILO products, the capacity of hoppers to choose from varies from 8§© to 20§© according to the needs of consumers, allowing them to work 12§µ per hour on vast grasslands such as airports and ports.
"Especially at airports where airplanes fly up and down, jet storms occur during takeoff and landing. The storm can cause foreign substances (FOD) to fly onto the runway, destroying the engine or damaging the tires, which can lead to serious accidents. This is why it is important to quickly remove and collect foreign substances such as grass, animal bodies and trash around the airport," he stressed.
According to Peter's explanation, the green area around the airport is always inhabited by wildlife and requires proper weeding and vacuum cleaning because external foreign substances fly in. In addition, uniform performance and precise control are required because a large area needs to be cleaned in a short time, and TRILO has vacuum collection folding wings that are 6m wide, enabling precise control and fast work.
In particular, TRILO Multi-purpose vacuum sweepers can be used for multiple tasks. There are many options available to extend the functionality. In addition to grass cutting, it can be used in various ways such as road cleaning, waste collection, waste collection, festival after cleaning, and leaf cleaning through various work shafts and suction hose options.
Peter, who was looking into the eyes of the reporter who was interested in the finished product, said, "But from the consumer's point of view, maintenance costs are always a concern. There should be no failures, one person should operate the machine sufficiently, and there should be no maintenance required. In that sense, there is no comparable product with TRILO." That's why about 50 countries are using TRILO products.
To sum up, TRILO vacuum sweeper can be driven by one person and there are no maintenance costs. With a width of 6m, it can work up to 12§µ per hour, and it can select the product according to the hopper capacity. From the airside FOD and habitat management to grass cutting, drain waste, fence food, garbage and fallen leaves, it can clean them up. So it was organized.
As I listened to the explanation, it got dark and the flight time approached, so I had to get up after taking a commemorative photo.
I sincerely declined Peter's offer to drive me to the airport even though he was scheduled to go on a business trip to Indonesia the next day, so I asked him to call a taxi.
I made an appointment with Peter without a promise to meet him again in the future and thought about it in the taxi back.
Korea also has international airports, ports, golf courses, wetlands, and riverside, so why can't we make such products?
Now I have to think seriously about that.
